An eating utensil is just another tool you need to get through day-to-day life. By putting some thought into optimizing the tools you carry, you can be better prepared for whatever life throws at you–both the mundane and memorable.

If you find yourself getting ready to eat without a utensil to eat with, you have a couple of options. You can revert back to your Neanderthal roots and just use your hands, or you can plan in advance by carrying a folding utensil with you on a daily basis.

You may think, “I don’t have the room” … “It’s too bulky” … “I don’t want to carry extra weight” … etc. We hear you loud and clear. However, those excuses aren’t really valid.

Let’s discuss why.

We often talk about how a person needs to be intentional with whatever they’re doing in life, especially with what they carry on a daily basis. Why? Because being prepared and having specific tools for specific tasks can prevent a lot of the little inconveniences in life, which rob you of your time and sanity. It’s typically not the big events in life that are occurring every day, it’s the little things that fill every nook and cranny of our time. A little forethought can go a long way.

With all the things you carry on a daily basis, why would you carry an eating utensil? We talked about this before when we identified the 5 Best eating utensils for travel. Having a spoon/spork/fork with you allows you to take care of one of the most critical parts of life, which is eating. This is especially important with travel because you lose a lot of control when you don’t have access to your car, your gear, your kitchen, your home, etc.

If we can agree that making sure you have an eating utensil is an important way to be prepared, than an easy way to do this is with one of the most popular pieces of gear, the folding titanium spork.

Let’s take a look at a few of the reasons why it’s a good choice.

Compact

At only 0.6 ounces in weight, the Vargo Folding Spork is easily stored in any bag or organizer.

By nature, a folding utensil is going to be more compact than its rigid counterparts. What this does is allow you to store it in a number of places you wouldn’t be able to with a full-size utensil. This comes in extremely handy when storing one of these in a compact gear organizer or similar pouch. This really helps when space is at a premium.

Lightweight

Weight is mitigated by the titanium. Titanium has low density, high strength, and has great corrosion resistance. Titanium is roughly half the weight of steel and is great for outdoor gear. When it comes to utensils, you can get a folding titanium spork that only weighs half an ounce.

Utilitarian

This Maxpedition MRZ Pocket Organizer can hold a lot of gear, which is available when you need it. A titanium spork is just one of many pieces of gear that can make day-to-day life much easier.

Especially in terms of a spork, what’s not to love. Granted, a spork doesn’t quite perform as well as a dedicate fork or a dedicated spoon, but it’s not lagging too far behind. We love gear that can serve multiple purposes and a quality spork fits the bill.

Durable

If you’re an ultralight backpacker or looking to cut weight in your pack, titanium is the perfect choice when balancing weight, utility, and durability.

In terms of durability, a titanium spoon/spork surpasses most of the competition. Again, because of titanium’s high strength to weight ratio and its resistance to corrosion, it’s hard to beat. How many times have you used one of those plastic utensils from your favorite fast food joint only to have it break mid-meal? It sucks! Get a titanium folder and forget about it.

TSA compliant

Another great thing about carrying a folding titanium spoon/spork is that you can stow it with the rest of your gear and forget about it. Since they comply with TSA regulations, you never have to worry about getting hassled about it on your next flight.

Using one creates less trash

Think of all the junk disposable utensils you can keep out of the garbage by using one of these. Tree hugger or not, a reusable eating utensil is one less thing to throw in the garbage. We want to keep our world as clean as possible for future generations, and being intentional about not creating unnecessary trash is always a good start.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a folding spoon or spork and throw it in your briefcase, purse, gear organizer, backpack or whatever. Next time you’re in a bind and need something to eat with, you will be glad you did.

Do you carry an eating utensil? If so, what is your first choice and why?
