We ran across RUUK on Instagram and found two guys that are committed to creating functional art. This week we paired a FIK we picked up with a new MARATAC flashlight that is a great self-defense option, a simple and functional stainless steel pen, a subdued gray pocket notebook, and a pocket-friendly way to carry a tourniquet--a simple and intentional EDC.
We have the MARATAC AAx2 Extreme Glow Flashlight, the PHLster Flatpack Tourniquet Carrier which is holding a black Tactical Medical Solutions SOF Tactical Tourniquet Wide, a Schon DSGN Classic EDC Pen in Tumbled Stainless Steel, and the Word. Notebooks Charcoal 3.5 x 5.5 Notebook 3-Pack.
We first found RUUK Knives on Instagram and we were drawn to the original look of their knives. In talking to them, the story got better, as these two friends are committed to creating functional art in small batches. After chatting with them for a bit we ended up with the FIK pictured above. They wanted to make sure we would actually use the knife, and we've had fun incorporating it into our daily carry. We hope to be able to work with them in the future.
Be sure to check out the knives and other gear over at ruuk.co. They're real innovators who are trying to stay away from re-creating things that have already been done, which in today's world, is a great find.
That brings us to tour featured EDC. Small-batch artisan gear is something we value here at Option Gray and when that small-batch gear can be used and abused, it makes it even better.
Let's take a look.
MARATAC AAx2 Extreme Glow Flashlight (Gen 4) ($54.99)
The new Gen 4 Extreme LED Flashlight from MARATAC is powered by two AA batteries and pushes out an incredibly bright 635 lumens.
New with this version is also a more focused beam. It features a glow-in-the-dark tail cap with a glow-in-the-dark o-ring around the reflector. The black powder coated pocket clip allows you to keep the light easily accessible, no matter if you keep it in your pocket, in your car, or in your organizer.
One of the best features of the Extreme LED Flashlight is the user-friendly memory mode, or UFMM. The flashlight "remembers" the last mode you used (once the light is off for at least 5 seconds) and will turn on in the last mode. This makes the light a great option for self-defense, as you can always leave the light in high.
PHLster Flatpack Tourniquet Carrier ($19.99)
Carrying a tourniquet as part of a Primary EDC can sometimes prove to be problematic. Stored in a bulky case or held together by rubber bands, it can become cumbersome to carry on your person and hard to access. As a result, there are many who simply omit carrying a tourniquet, which can be a critical piece of their everyday carry. The solution? An innovative way to carry a windlass tourniquet for everyday applications.
The Flatpack's simplistic design allows you to flat fold your tourniquet (we've paired it with Tactical Medical Solutions SOF Tactical Tourniquet Wide in black) and secure it to the backboard via durable elastic shock cord. The Flatpack has an adjustable tension system which allows it to be used with just about any tourniquet. The included polymer coated nylon soft-loops allow it to be mounted horizontally on the belt for use with either hand. If you prefer a pocket or off-body carry, simply remove the soft-loops which allows a more compact profile.
Schon DSGN Classic EDC Pen, Tumbled Stainless Steel ($98.00)
The Tumbled Stainless Steel Classic EDC Pen by Schon DSGN is simple, functional, and unique. When looking for a pen that is easily carried in your pocket, you want it to be dependable, compact, durable, leak proof, and easy to hold and write with. That is exactly what the Schon DSGN pen is. It's unobtrusive in your pocket, but becomes full-size when in use, as the cap screws on to the back of the pen. The smooth body makes it easy to hold, but comfortable, and the replacing the ink is easy with the small brass setscrew.
